President’s Remarks

Thanks to the Academy for a very warm welcome

Rally was a huge success, ~250 present including some administrators, Rege, other districts.

Next rally in Holyoke, Tale of 4 Cities

Rege knows that there’s a funding problem and he seems to be backing up those words with his actions.

Introduced executive board. Stresses the goal of keeping transparency in our workings.

We’ll be attending sports games to make the CEA publicly known.

The goal is to have 10 minute meetings at least once a month.

Laura has convinced SC to give her a chair, not membership though, on School Committee.

WeMEAN is a coalition of education locals to support each other.

 

Treasurer Report

Discussed costs of the CEA and rates of CD, checking, savings. People’s doesn’t offer good prospects.

Motion to move funds to Westfield Bank by Kathy Abood. Seconded by Deb Green. Motion passed unopposed.

 

New Business

Academy – People talked up the students at Academy. Often feels more like an entertainer than a educator. Enjoy the flexibility of not having the tight structure of CHS and CCHS.

The struggle comes from the energy input to a majority of the students.

Elementary half days will be released with new CSC calendar on 10/17.

 

Unit A Ratification – Unit A has ratified. School committee votes on 10/17.

 

Unit B Tentative Agreement – Vote for Unit B is this week.

 

Unit E Tentative Agreement – Vote for Unit E is 10/11/2018.

 

Unit D Tentative Agreement – 10/15/2018 is next negotiation meeting.

 

Retroactive Paychecks – Jason did math for payroll, so turnaround should be much faster. Payroll has said they were planning to do this year’s 1% first, but we reminded them that last year’s retro would further increase this.

Longevity should be given automatically. Let us know if your paycheck isn’t increased.

~7% of Unit A is not on direct deposit

HR didn’t accept direct deposit from bank, only from Chicopee School Department Form. HR needs to be proactive for giving teacher’s this information.

 

Munis System – It can be used to check paycheck information. We can get on to this system to check on salary, sick days, etc.

 

State Funding – Discussion based on funding by foundation budget. Examined what we have and what we could do with $14.5 million annually.

The state is grossly underfunding education because formula hasn’t been updated since 1993.

 

Old Business

Health Insurance 2018-2019 – Insurance issues.

 

CEA Christmas Party – Suggestions for a venue. We’ll try the Portuguese Club or a “winter” party some place else

 

Monthly Member Meetings – CAT/building reps will be trained.

 

Bi-Monthly School Committee Meetings – They listen when teachers speak. Previous MO was listening to mayor and Superintendent only.
